Abstract: We design a highly accurate discontinuous-Galerkin-based strategy for computing wave traveltimes and amplitudes in heterogeneous anisotropic media, which is of major interest for a large range of applications in seismics, including seismic imaging. Our strategy, based on a general Hamiltonian formulation, handles complex boundary geometries such as topographies using deformed meshes and suitable radiation boundary conditions. Eikonal and transport equations are solved in order to reconstruct asymptotic Green’s functions and perform Kirchhoff migration.

Abstract: Computation of traveltimes and its spatial derivatives is at the core of many seismic imaging techniques. We present recent advances related to anisotropic media with complex topographies, where an efficient and accurate discontinuous Galerkin method for solving the non-linear Eikonal partial differential equation allows us to revisit techniques such as traveltime tomography, stereotomography, and migration. In particular, we draw a comparison between wave-equation based approach and Kirchhoff approach in the least-square migration, making use of the inverse extended Born operator to precondition the process.
